Pope Post
You know I thought it was dumb that they wanted an older Pope, well this weekend I heard why that is. Because the church grows stagnate when there is a single Pope in office for that long. Also getting a new Pope re-energizes the church. It’s like having a successful marketing campaign. The more turnover you have in today’s times the more time you get in the media cycles. More press time means the church is in the minds of people more and they are more likely to be involved in the church if they are thinking about the church regardless of the reason.
This is sort of a cynical look at modern society and the church but it is far from untrue. In a way the Death of the Pope was good for the church. Yes I am aware that is rather morbid, but also not untrue. This however would not be so if John Paul was not such a wonderful man. He was loved and respected by millions, if not billions. His death however served a purpose, in that it brought the church back into the hearts and minds of many people, Catholic or not.
One could also say in a much more cynical tone, that the Cardinals want to get a quick turn over in the Papacy so that they get a chance to become Pope. That’s a pretty cynical claim, and I don’t have any evidence to say that it’s true or not, but knowing human nature as I do, I have to think it has to have crossed a few of their minds. If you are a student of history or if you have read “The Prince” then you know that the office the Pope holds has in the past been used for ones personal gain. The potential is still there however in a much weaker form, and the potential for human mischief is omni-present.
In the end you have to have faith that God’s will has been done even when working through the will of man
